The Second Night of Yule marks the Winter Solstice, the longest night of the year and the sacred turning point of the season. On this night, darkness reaches its deepest stillness—and from that stillness, the light is reborn. From this moment forward, each day grows a little brighter, a quiet promise carried on the cold air.
Across many old traditions, the Solstice is a night of watching and waiting. Fires are tended, candles are lit, and families gather close to honor endurance, hope, and the steady cycle of renewal. It is a time to reflect on what has been weathered through the year and to gently welcome what is yet to come.
This night invites us to slow down, to sit with the silence, and to remember that even in the darkest season, warmth can be made—by shared food, by spoken blessings, and by light kindled with intention.
Many choose to light a single candle at sunset, symbolizing the returning sun, and keep it burning through the night or relight it at dawn. Others share a simple meal rooted in winter stores—grains, roots, honey, and spices—foods that remind us of preservation and care.

Solstice Hearth Bread with Honey & Rosemary
This simple bread is meant to be shared warm, torn by hand, and enjoyed slowly.
Ingredients
3 cups all-purpose or bread flour
1 packet (2¼ tsp) active dry yeast
1 cup warm water (not hot)
2 tbsp honey
2 tbsp olive oil or melted butter
1½ tsp salt
1 tbsp fresh rosemary, finely chopped (or 1 tsp dried)
Extra honey and butter for serving
Instructions
In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water with the honey. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
Stir in olive oil, salt, and rosemary.
Add flour gradually, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for about 8 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1–1½ hours, until doubled.
Shape into a round loaf and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
Let rise another 30 minutes.
Preheat oven to 375°F.
Bake for 25–30 minutes, until golden and hollow-sounding when tapped. Serve warm with butter and honey.

A Solstice Reflection
As the Second Night of Yule unfolds, may you find comfort in the knowing that the light returns not all at once, but faithfully—day by day. May the warmth you create this night carry you through the season ahead, and may hope rise quietly, like the sun waiting beyond the dark.
